The cows are restless for a bite, They have been turned out despite the grass shortage, and mean around disconsolately, with the double aggravation of desire—but no wherewithal with which to satisfy it. It is a serious mistake, this prema- ture grazing. It upsets the cows—it spoils the patsure, The young, tender grass, very watery, and insufficient, provides but a mere taste, and in ad- dition, receives a set-back from which it very tardily recovers. Keep the cows off grass until it is four to six inches high. It is sound dairy practice and sound economics, Grass is the natural feed of the dairy cow. It isa tonic and stimulus to milk production. Most cows usually respond with an increased milk yield. For this reason many dairymen are led to think that it is not n@cessary to feed grain with pasture grass, This is a serious error. If no grain is fed, the cows that went to pasture in good flesh will be thin by July. They will have ex- hausted the reserves of the body. Then milk production drops, and no amount of feeding will bring it back. It is unwise to try to save feed by relying on pasture alone. Poor milk production in winter is the result of poor feeding in summer. The bulky nature of pasture grass places Abbotsford Trdtrafer Messrs. Professor ©, H. Eckles, the famous dairy expert of the University of Mis- | sour; suggests the following quantities of grain, with abundant pasture: ISuy or Guernsey cow producing— 20ibs of milk daily—3lbs of grain. 80lbs. of milk daily—6lbs of grain. 40lbs. of milk daily—10lbs of grain, Holstein of Ayrshire cow producing — 30Ibs of milk daily—Slbs of grain, 401bs of milk daily—Slbs of grain. 50lbs of milk daily—10lbs of grain. With early spring pasture, the grain mixture should be lower in protein and rich in carbohydrates, 12-16 per cent, protein in the grain ration in ideal for this time of the year. It has been proved that the feeding of minerals is especially important dur- ing the pasture season, owing to the fact that mineral assimilation is much more complete when animals are con- suming natural green roughage and ex- posed to the medicinal action of sun- shine. All high producing cows should re- ceive an adequate mineral supply in their daily grain ration during the spring and summer months.
