Headlines/January 26, 1998 Faculty file Burton earns EdD Congratulations to Communication department head Wendy Burton, whose EdD in Theory and Policy Studies in Education, from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, was approved in December. Her dissertation is on Teacher Knowledge and First Nations adult education. It is an inter-disciplinary study of feminist pedagogy, ethics, literature, and epistemology. “I submitted the proposal for the dissertation at the end of my residency year — a week before my son Harry was born. For the past five and a half years, I’ve been a full-time instructor/ department head, a full-time (although aging gracefully) parent, a full-time doctoral candidate and, I hope, a full-time person,” reports Wendy. “I am, to put it mildly, glad the blessed thing is done.” Harper co-authors article Kinesiology’s Dave Harper has been published in the Journal of Experimental Biology. He is one of several co-authors of Experimental Simulation of the Thrust Phases of Fast-Start Swimming of Fish. Dunlop in Internet-based journal ECE/CYC department head Ted Dunlop and co-author Barry Forer have just had an article published in College Quarterly.The article is entitled Developmental Issues for Telecourse Delivery: An Instructional Perspective. “The interesting feature of this journal is that it has gone totally Internet-based,” reports Ted. Zukowski honoured Helena Zukowski, a long-time sessional ESL instructor and travel & script writer (topics which she has taught for CE) has been the recipient of two distinguished awards: The first award is the “Leonardo”, It is given by Alitalia Airlines to travel writers in various countries each year. Helena was awarded the 1997 Leonardo for the best travel story about Italy written by a Canadian travel writer. She was flown to Italy as a guest of Alitalia | to receive the award! The second award is the Canadian’ Antour award. Antour is an organization of about 48 tourist boards and the entries are judged by three deans of journalism. _ Helena received the Travel Writer of the Year award.
