Start Picking And Curing Tobacco _ Crop On Sumas Lake Area Picking of early varieties of tobacco is underway on the Hungarian Tobac- co Growers’ plantation on Sumas, and the crop is almost perfect in quality, and abundant in yield. A large dry- ing shed has just been erected, in con- struction of which each alternate board (built vertically) in the walls is hinged, and when opened allow thorough dry- ing of the leaves by air ventilation About 40 acres are in tobacco crop. Barley on the government farm at Sumas is averaging one ton to the acre, and most of the grain has been sold. It is being shipped out over the B.C-E., and loaded on the new spur track south of the hop fields. Does Vancouver Care? One phase of the Yale road situa- tion that has appeafed more than passing strange to Chilliwack people has been the apparent lack of interest or concern shown by the B. C. Auto- mobile Club and the Vancouver Board of Trade. The former did send a delegation to Victoria on one occasion to request improvement, but so far as anyone out here is aware that is the sum total of the effort made. The Club has not one nundred per cent membership here, but there is a large number who have retained their WEIR’S GARAGE Phone Farmers 3413: B.C. 36 Barber Shoe Co. The Low Priced Shoe Store. Ship in the Club mainly for the purpose of hoping for the co-operation of the Club in just such matters as the. improvement of the Yale road. A few but very few, take advantage of the incidental services ayailavle. The Vancouver Board of Trade, which always professes a great deal of concern for the interests of the Fraser Valley, might easily throw the weight of their influence with the Fraser Valley toward having this black eye to the mainland of this province removed. The Vancouver Daily Province has repeatedly urged the hardsurfacing of this forty-six mile stretch of trunk highway. That leaders in these organizations are aware of the condition of the road can hardly be side-stepped. It is understood, for instance, that a rep- resentative of the Auto Club was in the city during the week, and when asked how he found the road, he is reported to have said “very fair”. Asked if he referred to the Yale road, he replied that he never drove over that road, but travelled either by Blaine and over the paved highways of Washing- ton State or along the north road via Mission. Can it be that Vancouver is not in- terested in the Fraser Valley except when the subject is milk.?—Chilliwack Progress.
