This paper evaluates the effectiveness of British Columbia’s carbon tax in reducing green-
house gas(GHG)emissions. Multiple regression analyses, including difference-in-differences
methods, are conducted using data from Canada’s official greenhouse gas inventory and other
economic data. The results are robust and indicate that the BC carbon tax has not signifi-
cantly reduced overall GHG emissions, potentially due to contradictory overlapping policies.
Policy recommendations include streamlining environmental policies and advocating for the
renegotiation of the Paris Accord to account for Canada’s forest sinks. This paper highlights
the need for coherent environmental policies to achieve meaningful reductions in GHG emis-
sions for Canada and globally.
