Abstract
Objectives: Children with FASD demonstrate a myriad of behavioural, social and cognitive problems. Studies suggest that exercise can ameliorate some of the neuropsychological and behavioural deficits induced by prenatal alcohol exposure. We have evaluated the effects of a physical activity intervention (FAST Club), run as an after-school program, on neuropsychological function. Our results support the idea that physical activity interventions may have positive effects on some aspects of executive function and visuospatial processing. However, many families are unable to bring their children to after-school programs. Moreover, intervention programs supported by research funding are not sustainable in the long term. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of establishing FAST Club as a public school-based program, to improve accessibility for children with FASD and facilitate the translation of research into sustainable practice. |
